In short

Why you need it, even at home

UVB rays cause sunburn, but UVA rays are the ones behind tanning, pigmentation and fine lines, and they pass through windows. That is why dermatologists say to wear sunscreen even on work-from-home days. If you sit near a window or travel in a car, your skin is getting sun.

SPF and PA, simply

SPF tells you protection from UVB (burning). SPF 30 blocks about 97%, SPF 50 about 98%.
PA+ to PA++++ tells you protection from UVA (tanning and ageing). More plus signs means more protection. For Indian skin, aim for PA+++ or PA++++.

Which type suits your skin?

Oily or acne-prone: gel or "matte" sunscreens that dry quickly and don't feel heavy.
Dry: cream or lotion sunscreens with hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Sensitive: mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are usually gentler, but older formulas can leave a white cast on Indian skin tones. Newer tinted ones blend better.

The 3 mistakes most people make

1. Using too little. A pea-sized amount gives you a fraction of the SPF on the label. Use two finger-lengths.
2. Not reapplying. If you're outdoors, reapply every 2 to 3 hours. Sunscreen sticks or sprays make this easy over makeup.
3. Skipping it on cloudy days. Clouds don't block UVA. Wear it every day.

Never skip sunscreen again
